To ensure your shelter serves you well for more than 5 or even 10 years, proper care for the tent is essential. Below, we will share expert tips based on our years of experience in manufacturing and testing outdoor gear.

Post-trip tent care: quick guide

One-layer summer shelters are usually easy to maintain – their modular design allows you to clean their parts easily. However, caring for an instant-up tent with two flies might seem to be hard at first. Fortunately, it only takes three simple steps:

  1. Cleaning the flies
  2. Drying it
  3. Storing it in a dry place

Let’s break down each step to make tent care effortless.

Step-by-step tent care

1. Cleaning the flies

Before packing up your campsite:

  • Check the outer and inner flies for dirt or stains – if possible, clean them immediately to prevent permanent marks.

Important: Use only a soft sponge and lukewarm soapy water (under 30°C). Harsh brushes or chemicals can damage the fabric’s waterproof coating, reducing its effectiveness.

  • Shake off sand or snow (in winter) from the floor and skirt.
  • Check the frame and wipe off any dirt.

If you are in a hurry, clean the flies once you get home – but do not delay, it is important for tent care!

2. Drying the tent

You can dry it outdoors before leaving or at home. Choose based on weather and available space.

Outdoor drying:

  • Light a wood stove if it is cold or humid.
  • Open all doors and windows for airflow.
  • Wait until the flies are completely dry.

Indoor drying:

  • Unpack the tent in a dry, ventilated area or outside.
  • If space is limited, lay it near a heater or radiator, occasionally flipping and smoothing out folds to dry evenly.
  • Leave the storage bag open to air out residual moisture.

Always dry your gear! A damp, folded gear can develop mold.

3. Storing the tent

Once clean and dry, store it in:

  • Garage
  • Storage room
  • Balcony
  • Attic

Key requirements to the storage place: dry, shaded and well-ventilated. Avoid humidity and direct sunlight to prevent mold and fabric degradation.

  • Keep the camping item in its carrying bag to protect against dust, dirt or spills (e.g. garage oil).
  • Pro tip: Unpack and set up it twice a year to prevent fabric creasing and maintain its condition.

How to care about the tent: washing question

Think twice before washing! Frequent washing weakens the Oxford fabric’s coating. Instead:

  • Spot-clean dirty areas with a soapy sponge.
  • Only the floor may need washing (due to shoe dirt, crumbs, etc.).

If washing is necessary:

  • Hand-wash only – no scrubbing or wringing.
  • Use lukewarm water (under 30°C) and mild soap (or membrane detergent).
  • Hang-dry the flies, ensuring airflow on both sides.
  • Never iron! The fabric will smooth out when pitched.

Extra tips for tent care

  • Prevent inner fly stains by: Using a vestibule connector as a place for shoes or firewood storing (for PF Bereg UP series tents); Placing a doormat at the entrance or removing shoes outside; Laying down a waterproof sheet on the floor (e.g. polyester-reinforced PE) before uninstalling the tent. It protects the light fabric of the inner fly against dirt.
  • Secure the frame and  flies properly during transport – use straps to prevent shifting and fabric abrasion inside the bag.
  • Read the tent care guide. Follow setup and care instructions to enjoy your tent for years.

By following these steps, your PF Bereg tent will stay reliable after every trip. Happy camping!
